Earlier this month, we reported that reports had come in stating that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were quitting social media. Now, Harry himself has broken his silence to address these claims.

Harry told Fast Company that he and Meghan may revisit their social media platforms if a few things change first.

“We will revisit social media when it feels right for us—perhaps when we see more meaningful commitments to change or reform—but right now we’ve thrown much of our energy into learning about this space and how we can help,” he said.

Harry went on to correct sources who claimed that he and Meghan had “no plans” to ever return to social media. Harry said that he had not previously been aware of this report, adding that “ironically, we woke up one morning a couple of weeks ago to hear that a Rupert Murdoch newspaper said we were evidently quitting social media. That was ‘news’ to us, bearing in mind we have no social media to quit, nor have we for the past 10 months.”

“The truth is, despite its well-documented ills, social media can offer a means of connecting and community, which are vital to us as human beings,” Harry continued. “We need to hear each other’s stories and be able to share our own. That’s part of the beauty of life. And don’t get me wrong; I’m not suggesting that a reform of the digital space will create a world that’s all rainbows and sunshine, because that’s not realistic, and that, too, isn’t life. There can be disagreement, conversation, opposing points of view—as there should be, but never to the extent that violence is created, truth is mystified, and lives are jeopardized.”

Back in October, Meghan opened up about the hate she’s received online while appearing on the Teenager Therapy podcast.

“I’m told that in 2019 I was the most trolled person in the entire world, male or female,” she said during the podcast. “Now, eight months of that I wasn’t even visible, I was on maternity leave or with a baby. But what was able to just be manufactured and churned out, it’s almost unsurvivable, that’s so big, you can’t think of what that feels like, because I don’t care if you’re 15 or 25, if people are saying things about you that aren’t true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging.”
