The most significant impact COVID-19 has had on this country is of an economic nature. Businesses that were once thriving are now struggling to keep their doors open and employees on payroll. Even we’ll-established business are not immune to the effects of government shutdowns and a loss of patronage.

FOX NEWS shared a story of one such business, Siebert’s Clothing in Jasper, IN. Owned by James Siebert, the store was established in January 1922 by his grandfather. Set to celebrate 99 years of business next month, the family-owned store’s profits for December are less than half of what they usually are for this time of year.

“I’ll be darned if I couldn’t see it hit one hundred, but we would have to do it by the skin of our teeth,” Jim stated. Due to state regulations, the store was completely shut down for 6 weeks between March and May of this year.

Hoping to play their part in helping those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, Barstool Sports set up ‘Barstool Funds,’ which provides financial assistance to small businesses across the country. Established just two weeks ago in December 17 with an initial donation of $500,000 from Barstool founder David Portnoy. The fund now has a whopping $9.6 million dollars thanks to support from over 86,000 individuals, as well as big donations from celebrities such as Tom Brady. So far, the fund has sent vital financial assistance to 42 businesses.

Jim’s daughter and future owner of Siebert’s Clothing, Rachel, submitted her family’s business in hopes of being chosen for a donation from Barstool Funds, and everyone was shocked to receive a call from Mr. Portnoy informing them they had been chosen as one of the recipients of a $20,000 cash donation.

When Jim heard the news from David Portnoy himself through a FaceTime call, he was overcome with emotion and brought to tears.

“This potentially has saved our business and it’s just crazy,” a still-surprised Rachel said. “It just doesn’t feel real and what he’s doing is such an amazing thing.”

Not only has the donation from Barstool brought immediate financial relief to Siebert’s Clothing, but it has also brought new customers to the business, even outside of the U.S..

“We’re getting a lot of calls, emails, and Facebook messages. I had an email from Australia and a guy from Toronto called on Tuesday. We’re getting orders in from Texas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and just all over. It’s been very overwhelming, but in a good way,” she says.

This incredible generosity will help ensure the store is up and running for the fourth generation of Siebert’s to take over.
