The Hollywood star Betty White is preparing to celebrate her 99th birthday this coming Sunday, and in the lead-up to this momentous occasion, she’s given an interview in which she credits her “sense of humor” with keeping her young.

White sat down with People Magazine to offer some tips on staying positive and looking on the bright side of life.

“I don’t like the other side,” White said. “The positive side is a lot more fun.”

Born in 1922, White is a Hollywood icon known for starring on beloved shows like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls.” Over the years, she’s become a national treasure and is beloved by millions of fans all over the country.

As for turning 99, however, White does not see what the big deal is.

“I am blessed with good health, so turning 99 is no different than turning 98,” she said.

As for what keeps her going, White said, “A sense of humor. Don’t take yourself too seriously. You can lie to others — not that I would — but you cannot lie to yourself.”

Though this birthday will be a quiet one at home amidst the coronavirus pandemic, White said that she is looking forward to “visiting with close friends and bringing food to my animal friends” once life can return to normal and she can socialize again.

White is an outspoken animal rights activist whose favorite organizations include the Monterey Bay Aquarium,  Wildlife Learning Center and Actors and Others for Animals.

When it comes to specific plans for White’s birthday, she’s keeping things low-key this year.

“The pandemic won’t stop Betty from celebrating turning 99 years old,” an insider told Closer Weekly. “She’s planning a Zoom garden party with friends and a big chocolate birthday cake with candles. She’s always had a sweet tooth! She [also] asked for hotdogs and fries with ketchup.”

Now that she is nearing the one century mark, White has some simple advice for living a long and happy life.

“Again, having a sense of humor,” she said. “Just looking at the positive side and not dwelling on the downside. Takes up too much energy being negative. Also having a good agent who keeps me busy all the time.”
