On Sunday, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton began a three-day tour across the United Kingdom onboard the Royal Train. Fans of the British royal family were shocked to learn that the couple, who have been married for nine years, will be sleeping in separate beds, but it turns out that there is a good reason behind this.

People Magazine reported that the Royal Train has nine separate carriages that Queen Victoria initially had decorated with silks and satin so that it would look like Buckingham Palace. However, in the past one hundred years, it has been updated to a more modest design.

As for why William and Kate will be sleeping in separate beds, their suite has “his and hers” single beds. It also has a private bathtub and a 12-seat dining room that includes a Formica table. In addition, the train has a kitchen in which staff can make meals, and a work room for the royals to use for business.

The current nine carriages that are used on the Royal Train have been in use all the way back to Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. They replaced the previous carriages, which had been in use since 1941.

William and Kate began their three day trip on the train on Sunday, and they will be spending the next few days traveling all over towns and cities in England, Scotland and Wales to hear personal stories from the British public about life amidst the coronavirus pandemic. While William has been on the Royal Train many times, this is Kate’s first trip.

“The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to shining a spotlight on the incredible work that has been done across the country throughout this difficult year and to sharing their gratitude on behalf of the nation for all those supporting their local communities ahead of the Christmas holidays,” a spokesperson for William and Kate said in a statement.

Their office added that the couple will be meeting with frontline workers, volunteers, care home staff, teachers, schoolchildren and young people to hear about their “experiences, sacrifices and the inspiring work they have done throughout this challenging year.”
