Dozens of farmers from Divide County, North Dakota recently put their own harvests on hold and came together to cut 1,000 acres for a farmer who suffered a heart attack after his combine caught fire.

Lane Unhjem, 57, was in the middle of working on his harvest when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest. He was then airlifted to Minot, where doctors were able to stabilize his condition.

After this medical emergency, around sixty farmers brought 11 combines, six grain carts, and 15 semis to get Unhjem’s Durum Wheat and Canola in the bin.

“I talked to a couple of farmers, got their equipment, and then other people just started calling and we had equipment offered from all over the place in the county, and their workers to go with it,” Jenna Binde said to KFYR.

The farmers who helped out said that they did so because leaving Unhjem’s crops unharvested would have been a crushing blow to his family during a time that is already difficult.

“Everybody knows the Unhjems, and they’re good people and good in the community, and just kind of the farming way of life too,” Binde added. “You help your neighbor out when they need it and don’t expect anything in return.”

“On the last field, everyone met,” she continued. “We had 11 machines and all the other equipment going in the same field. That was a sight to see.”

The farmers were able to harvest Unhjem’s 1,000 acres of crops in just seven hours over one weekend.

“If Lane was just doing it with him and a hired hand, it would have taken them about two weeks,” Cassie Bummer told the Williston Herald.

Bummer, who is a medical worker, has since set up a GoFundMe page for Unhjem.

“We all know how fast the medical bills can add up, even if you have full insurance,” she said. “So we just figured it would be nice to start a little something for them.”

Bummer also said that she was not surprised that her community stepped up to help in this way.

“Out in the country, someone living 10 miles away you still consider them your neighbor,” Bummer said. “Whenever any farmer or neighbor gets tangled up with something, it doesn’t take long for them to pull together to help out.”
