A group of firefighters were recently called to a home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after the elderly army veteran who lives there collapsed due to heat exhaustion while mowing his lawn. After treating the elderly veteran, the firefighters decided to go above and beyond to make sure the job he had started was finished when it came to cutting his grass.

Prince Pinkney, 83, was out doing yard work with his wife when he suddenly started to feel ill. The veteran’s leg, which had never fully recovered from a stroke, eventually gave out, causing him to collapsed.

“It was hot, and I got overheated,” he recalled to WSVN.“When it gave out, I just fell right in the yard out there.”

“He slipped, he just fell,” added his wife Rebecca. “I had him by the arm, but I couldn’t hold him up.”

A bystander who saw the elderly couple struggling called 911, which is when Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue was called.

Three firefighters rushed to the home within minutes and “treated them and checked them out.”

Once they had treated Pinkney, the firefighters teamed up to finish mowing his lawn.

“I think we can cut their lawn while we’re doing this,” said Lt. Matthew Wells, with another firefighter adding, “It wasn’t much of a discussion.”

The couple could not have been more grateful for what the firefighters did for them.

“We really appreciate you,” Rebecca said, with Pinkney adding, “Thank you very, very much.”

The three firefighters even came back a few hours later to check on the couple, just to make sure they were still alright. They then saluted Pinkney, who was a missile tech in Vietnam.

“Their story is amazing in itself,” said FLFR Capt. Terry Maylor. “Their age, what they’ve gone through, his history as a veteran serving this country. If that doesn’t move you to go ahead and do what you’re capable of, then nothing will.”

Pinkney and his wife said that they usually pay someone to mow their lawn for them, but that person had not been available on this particular day. God bless these firefighters to go above and beyond to help this elderly veteran and his wife!
