A former staffer at Buckingham Palace has confessed to stealing items worth up to £100,000 ($133,534) from the royal residence of Queen Elizabeth and then selling them on eBay.

The BBC reported that Adamo Canto, who was a catering assistant at the palace, pled guilty to three counts of theft between November 2019 and August 2020 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The 37 year-old admitted to stealing a “significant quantity” of items, which police later found at his quarters at the palace’s Royal Mews.

The stolen items included signed official photographs of Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton. He Canto also stole a Companion of Bath medal that belonged to the Master of the Household, Vice Admiral Master Tony Johnstone-Burt. Johnstone-Burt released a statement afterwards saying that he’d discovered that the medal was missing when he went to wear it for Trooping the Colour.

Canto additionally took a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order medal from the locker of former British Army officer Maj Gen Richard Sykes, which the Queen had given to him back in 2010. Another stolen item found in Canto’s possession was a royal state banquet photo album of President Donald Trump’s visit to the United Kingdom, worth $2,000.

A total of 77 items were taken from the palace shop, while other items were stolen from staff lockers, the Queen’s Gallery shop and Prince Andrew’s storeroom. Prosecutor Simon Maughan told the court that 37 of the items were sold on eBay for “well under” their value, earning Canto $10,000.

Canto was able to take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic because he was given more access to offices and other areas that he did not typically frequent. The court released Canto on conditional bail, but warned him that he faces a possible jail sentence. Canto is a native of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and he will be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court at a later date.

The Queen has not been at Buckingham Palace since March, as the 94 year-old monarch has been isolating at Windsor Castle with her 99 year-old husband, Prince Philip. She is currently trying to figure out her Christmas plans, as it will certainly be a different sort of holiday for her amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
