A proud father from Ohio has found himself becoming a viral star after a powerful video made the rounds online showing him step up to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” from the stands after the audio stopped working before a high school basketball game.
The Waverly High Tigers were about to take on the Portsmouth West High Senators in West Portsmouth when the audio suddenly stopped working during the playing of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Knowing that Americans need to hear the national anthem more than ever these days, Trenton Brown decided to step up and sing it from the stands.
“I looked over at the announcer and the music didn’t play and didn’t play and I looked over and he was getting a little frustrated. My wife gave me a little nudge and said ‘Sing’ and I said, ‘All right,’” Brown recalled to CNN.
Though Brown has been singing and performing all his life, he said this was his first time performing the national anthem solo.
“There was a lot of awkward silence … and then I started singing and that was it,” he said.
When he was done, Brown simply sat down and started his eating popcorn and drinking his Mountain Dew while he waited for the game to start.
The video quickly went viral after it was posted to Facebook by Johnny Futhey, whose son plays with Brown’s son on the Waverly High School basketball team.
“He brought about everyone in the gym to tears when he saved the day by standing up in the crowd and singing the anthem,” Futhey said.
“When I originally posted I thought it would get some interest but didn’t realize it would be like a million views!” he added. “I posted it because I was like, the world needs to see this.”
Sure enough, social media users can’t get enough of Brown’s performance!
