The federal Bureau of Prison has fired back at the disgraced British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged former madam of the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, on Monday after her lawyers claimed that she was being mistreated behind bars.

The New York Post reported that lawyers for the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn filed a letter claiming that Maxwell, 58, is being treated like any other inmate in the facility. This was in response to her attorneys complaining about the “onerous” conditions she is being kept in, alleging that the 2019 suicide of Epstein in prison has led to intrusive monitoring of Maxwell in the hopes of ensuring that she won’t do the same thing.

However, MDC lawyers have responded by claiming that prison officials are treating Maxwell like they would any other high-profile inmate, ensuring her safety without being unduly restrictive towards her.

“Since Ms. Maxwell’s arrival, she has been provided three meals a day in accordance with BOP policy and its National Menu,” Sophia Papapetru, a staff attorney at the prison, wrote in a letter to Manhattan federal court Judge Alison Nathan. “Her medical records show that she currently weighs 134 pounds, which fluctuates plus or minus 2 pounds.”

MDC lawyers also defended the prison after Maxwell complained that she was being woken up every 15 minutes with a flashlight during the night to ensure that she was still breathing.

“MDC Brooklyn correctional staff utilize flashlights when viewing inmates’ cells overnight to ensure inmates are still breathing and not in distress,” the letter stated.

The MDC lawyers went on to say that between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., Maxwell is free to access the facility’s common areas and can access “recreational space, social calls, television, shower, legal telephone calls, email, computers, and discovery material.”

The lawyers also said that Maxwell spends much of her time on the phone, as she gets 500 minutes per month of social calls, which she has used.

Once Maxwell returns to her cell, the attorneys said that she can snack on a range of items from the commissary and can drink water. Officials even check the temperature in her cell three times a day in order to make sure that it is adequately heated, according to the letter.

Maxwell was arrested in July on multiple charges related to her allegedly grooming young girls for sex with Epstein, and sometimes participating in the abuse herself. She has been remanded to federal custody until her trial, which is scheduled for next July, after a judge deemed her to pose a significant flight risk given her immense wealth and international connections.
