For Mila Sneddon, her scary and challenging battle with leukemia was made even more difficult due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The little 4-year-old from Falkirk, Scotland spent March through May separated from her father due to concerns he may expose her to COVID since he was still going into work every day.

In November of last year, the little girl was taken to the doctor for an exam after coming home from preschool exhausted. It was then that Mila was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The family decided the best way to protect Mila as the coronavirus began creeping across the United Kingdom was for dad, Scott (50), to temporarily leave the family home and isolate elsewhere.

Mila’s big sister, Jodi (16), was attending school at the time and also made the difficult decision to isolate outside of their family home to reduce the likelihood of exposing Mila’s fragile immune system to infection.

This left mom, Lynda (36), Mila’s sole companion during those two months. But Scott made sure to visit his daughter every day, where he and Mila would visit through the big kitchen window of their home. At the time, Mila was 4 months into her chemotherapy treatments, which made the separation even harder on them both.

During this time, Lynda lost her grandmother who had tested positive for COVID-19. In an effort to spread awareness for the need to take precautions, Lynda shared a touching photo of Mila giving her dad a kiss through their window. The picture garnered immediate attention and Mila soon had an impressive fan club in the UK, including Kate Middleton.

“She feels anxious at bedtime knowing her dad and sister are not home, but his visits at the window make her happy,” Lynda shared with

In May, Scott discovered he and several other employees at the company he worked for were getting furloughed due to the pandemic. While unfortunate, the silver lining was that he would finally be able come home to Lynda and Mila.

Mila’s parents did not share with her the good news that her dad was moving back home. After his final two-week quarantine to ensure he posed no health risks to Mila, Scott came home to what his daughter thought was a routine window visit.

When she realized her dad was home for good and she could give him a proper hug again, the little girl’s overwhelming joy came out in uncontrollable tears as she ran to her father’s open arms for a long-overdue embrace.

Of the precious moment, Lynda said “Mila leaped on him and wrapped her legs around him like a monkey holding on to him for a long time – she got very emotional and we both had a lump in our throats.”
