Like millions of other people all over the world, Queen Elizabeth is trying to figure out how best to celebrate Christmas this year amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

The 94 year-old typically hosts a series of Christmas gatherings with her family, but given how spread out around the world the royals are amidst COVID-19, it will be difficult for her to do that this year.

“Christmas is something the Queen has always done with enormous, genuine family style, and is facing not doing so sadly,” royal biographer Robert Lacey, author of “Battle of Brothers,” told People Magazine. He added that “she is accepting of that.”

Like everyone else in the United Kingdom, the Queen is waiting for the British government to announce updated guidelines that will let people know what kind of family events will be possible over the holidays. The Queen has reportedly already canceled the annual sparkling reception for diplomats and embassy staffs, which typically takes place at Buckingham Palace early in December. She’s also canceled the holiday party for her extended family that she usually holds at the palace later in the month.

The Queen is currently isolating at Windsor Castle with her 99 year-old husband, Prince Philip. She reportedly hasn’t yet decided if she will stay there or move to her Sandringham estate in Norfolk for the traditional Christmas and New Year’s holiday. If she does make the move to Sandringham, she will be only two miles away from her grandson Prince William’s family, as they are at their country home of Anmer Hall.

A source told People Magazine that William and his wife Kate Middleton “are waiting to hear [about U.K. government guidelines] just like everyone else.” Their three children – Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2 – reportedly miss their great-grandmother the Queen very much.

“The children miss their great-granny, but it’s the same rules for them as everyone,” the insider added.

Meanwhile, the Queen’s grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are preparing to host their own Christmas celebration across the world in Montecito, California. They will be celebrating the holiday there with their 1 year-old son Archie and Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.
