A new documentary about the late Princess Diana is exposing how BBC reporter Martin Bashir played off her conspiracy fears to score his infamous bombshell 1995 interview with her on “Panorama.” A royal biographer has claimed that Bashir even went so far as to tell Diana that security forces were “going to wipe you.”

Royal biographer Andrew Morton said in the documentary “The Diana Interview: The Truth Behind the Scandal” that Bashir mentioned this assassination plot when he gave Diana a fake bank statement showing that her private secretary and Prince Charles’ private secretary were working together with the security forces.

“They were implicated in this kind of dark conspiracy, to the point where Diana thought that her head was on the chopping block,” Morton said, according to Daily Mail.

“[Bashir] was feeding her stories which left her, and I am quoting from one of Diana’s confidantes here, ‘terrified, horrified,’” he added.

Patrick Jephson, Diana’s private secretary, opened up about how he felt when he heard what Bashir had done. It was particularly difficult for him to handle this given the fact that Bashir’s lies only came to light after Diana had already died in a 1997 car crash at the age of 36.

“It upsets me more than I can say that, quite possibly, the princess died thinking that I had betrayed her,” Jephson said.

This comes after the BBC commissioned an independent investigation into Bashir’s conduct with this interview, with a spokesperson saying that the network “determined to get to the truth of what happened.” Diana’s son Prince William has since voiced his support for the investigation.

“The independent investigation is a step in the right direction,” William said. “It should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the Panorama interview and subsequent decisions taken by those in the BBC at the time.”

Sources say that Diana’s younger son Prince Harry is “aware of everything” that is happening with this investigation.

“Harry is getting regular updates and is aware of everything that is happening,” a source told Entertainment Tonight. “You do not need a public statement to imagine how he is feeling privately, people know how much his mother means to him. He has bravely spoken out in the past about loss and grief, and the immense impact it has had on him.”

“Sadly, some people are not just seeing this as a drive for truth, but also trying to use this as an opportunity to try to drive a wedge between the brothers,” the insider added.
