Court papers that were filed on Wednesday show that Meghan Markle was told by two senior members of the British royal family to write a letter to her estranged father, Thomas Markle.

Fox News reported that Meghan is in the midst of suing the publisher Associated Newspapers for invasion of privacy and copyright infringement over five articles that featured excerpts from a letter she wrote to her father just before her 2018 marriage to Prince Harry. Meghan’s legal team said in the court documents that she wrote Thomas the letter “in an attempt to get him to stop talking to the press.”

Her lawyers added that due to her “distress” at media coverage of her father “and as the newest member of the royal family who wanted to follow protocol, the claimant sought advice from two senior members of the royal family on how best to address the situation.” They claimed that Meghan wrote the letter “in accordance with the advice that she had received.”

The court filing did not name the specific members of the royal family who had told Meghan to write this letter.

Associated Newspapers has fired back at Meghan by claiming that she had help writing the letter from her and Harry’s then-communications director, Jason Knauf, or other palace staff. Meghan’s attorneys admitted that she showed a draft of the letter to her husband and to Knauf, who they said provided “feedback on the draft but no actual wording.”

The new court documents have also revealed that Meghan allowed someone close to her to speak to Omid Scohbie and Carolyn Durand, the authors of “Finding Freedom,” a behind-the-scenes book about her and Harry. The Associated Press reported that Meghan’s lawyers claimed that while neither she or Harry talked to the authors, she had an unidentified person explain to them the “true position” on one aspect of her relationship with her father to the authors. Her attorneys added that she reportedly did this to correct the false impression conveyed by Thomas Markle “that she had abandoned him.”

Meghan and Harry shocked the world when they stepped down as senior royals earlier this year. They have since moved to a lavish mansion in Santa Barbara, California, which is near Meghan’s hometown of Los Angeles.
