Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated their first Thanksgiving together in the United States on Thursday.

Ahead of the holiday, a source told Entertainment Tonight that “[Meghan and Harry] are going to have a quiet dinner at home and are looking forward to celebrating their first American Thanksgiving in the States as a family. They plan to enjoy a home-cooked meal with traditional Thanksgiving dishes, including recipes made with fresh vegetables from their garden.”

The couple celebrated Thanksgiving with their 1 year-old son Archie, and with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.

The holiday came at a difficult time for Meghan, as she just penned an op-e d for the New York Times in which she revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage back in July.

“Loss and pain have plagued every one of us in 2020, in moments both fraught and debilitating,” she wrote. “Moments sad, scary or sacrosanct are all lived out alone…There is no one stopping to ask, ‘Are you OK?'”

As Thanksgiving approached, Meghan wrote that “many of us separated from our loved ones, alone, sick, scared, divided and perhaps struggling to find something, anything, to be grateful for.”

She then encouraged readers to simply ask their loved ones, “Are you OK?”

“As much as we may disagree, as physically distanced as we may be, the truth is that we are more connected than ever because of all we have individually and collectively endured this year,” Meghan wrote. “We are adjusting to a new normal where faces are concealed by masks, but it’s forcing us to look into one another’s eyes — sometimes filled with warmth, other times with tears. For the first time, in a long time, as human beings, we are really seeing one another.”

“Are we OK?” Meghan added. “We will be.”

Sources told Vanity Fair that Meghan wanted to open up about her miscarriage because she and Harry wanted to encourage others talk about their miscarriages.

“They decided that they wanted to talk about this and that this was the right time to do so,” a friend close to Meghan and Harry said. “There’s a tone of hopefulness and optimism at the end of the article which I think shows where they are today. They are doing well.”
