Earlier this month, the legendary “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek died at the age of 80 after a long battle with cancer. Now, “Jeopardy!” show runners have announced what the initial plan is in terms of who will be hosting the program.

Sony Pictures Television released a statement to The Wrap stating that a lineup of “interim guest hosts” will be introduced once the show resumes production next week. The first of these hosts will be the legendary “Jeopardy!” champion Ken Jennings.

“A long-term replacement host will not be named at this time,” Sony added in a statement.

Production of “Jeopardy!” is set to resume on November 30, and the final episode hosted by Trebek will be premiering on January 4, 2021. While it had initially been scheduled to air on Christmas Day, Sony decided to extend the date “in order to give his millions of fans a chance to see his final appearances.”

“Alex believed in the importance of ‘Jeopardy!’! and always said that he wanted the show to go on after him,” “Jeopardy!” executive producer Mike Richards said in a statement. “We will honor Alex’s legacy by continuing to produce the game he loved with smart contestants and challenging clues. By bringing in familiar guest hosts for the foreseeable future, our goal is to create a sense of community and continuity for our viewers.”

The first episodes featuring the guest hosts will be airing on the week of January 11, 2021. Sony will be announcing the additional guest hosts in the weeks to come.

Richards previously said that Trebek had never told producers who he thought his replacement should be.

“He never mentioned names to us. He really wanted to be the host of the show, while he was the host of the show,” Richards told Entertainment Tonight. “So we didn’t say, ‘Hey, what about this person? What about that person?’ It was his show until he told us he was going to retire and, amazingly, he never did. I think that’s a blessing.”

Though Trebek never gave Richards a name as to who would replace him, “he did talk about what it would take to be a good Jeopardy! host.”

“Typical Alex. He was self-deprecating [and] said, ‘It’s not that hard.’ Let me tell you that it is maybe the hardest show on TV to host; 61 clues in 22 minutes, accents, pronunciations, scoring, calling on people, ruling on the answers,” Richards added. “He talked a lot about how it needs to be someone that the audience will respect, that’s believable in the role [and] has credibility… He was so smart that you bought it, because you knew he knew the answer, too.”
