The country music world is in mourning this week after the singer Doug Supernaw, who was best known for 1990s hits like “Reno” and “I Don’t Call Him Daddy,” passed away after a battle with lung and bladder cancer. He was 60 years-old.

Fox News reported that Supernaw’s death was confirmed by his record label on Friday.

“It is with great sadness that we annnounce the passing of Gold Record Country Artist, Doug Supernaw,” B&G Records said, adding that Supernaw had been diagnosed last year with advanced stage 4 lung and bladder cancer. He then began an “aggressive treatment schedule with the hopes of shrinking his numerous cancer cells.”

“Fighting the good fight for almost two years, Doug’s cancer had spread to his brain and spine, and he was placed in Hospice care in October 2020,” the label added.

Supernaw reportedly died in Texas on Friday surrounded by his family, and he is survived by his third wife Cissy Allen, as well as by his children and grandchildren.

Supernaw spent years working on oil rigs and as a concert promoter throughout Texas before moving to Nashville in the late 1980s to take a job as a staff writer at a music publishing company. He moved back to Texas a few years later in the hopes of being able to perform more, and he slowly gained a wider fanbase by performing as the opening act for performers passing through the city of Tyler.

He released his debut album “Red and Rio Grande” in 1993, and it was a huge hit, getting certified gold. His song “I Don’t Call Him Daddy,” was a number 1 hit and it was about a divorced father and son. The music video for the song featured Supernaw and his actual son.

Supernaw ended up earning a new male artist and song of the year nominations from the Academy of Country Music in 1993. However, his second album “Deep Thoughts From a Shallow Mind,” which was released in 1994, was not nearly as successful.

Undeterred, Supernaw switched labels and released his third album “You Still Got Me,” in 1995. This album featured the top 5 hit country hit “Not Enough Hours in the Night.”

Supernaw enjoyed a successful career from there, and an album of his greatest hits was released in 2017. He will be dearly missed by his millions of fans from all over the country.
