Last week, we reported that country music star Blake Shelton had finally proposed to his girlfriend of five years, his fellow singer and “The Voice” coach Gwen Stefani. Now, a source close to the couple has come forward to say that before the proposal, Shelton made sure to get permission from Stefani’s sons Kingston, 14, Zuma, 12, and Apollo, 6.
“Blake told her boys that he wanted to propose and asked their permission,” the source told People Magazine. “Her family very much approves of him. He’s an amazing partner and a great extra dad to the boys. Gwen is ecstatic. The proposal was a surprise.”]
Though Shelton and Stefani kept their engagement private for a few days, the insider said they were “very excited” to share the news with the word.
Shelton, 44, and Stefani, 51, have said for years that they were each other’s “forever” partners. However, since they’d both had failed marriages in the past, they wanted to be sure to build a strong foundation to their relationship before they walked down the aisle.
“Going through all these hard times, [you] get to a place where you find somebody that’s like your best friend, that you know you can depend on and trust,” Stefani told Today back in 2018. “We’re just trying to be in the moment as much as we can.”
When Shelton and Stefani met in 2015, they were each in the process of divorcing famous singers. He was divorcing his fellow country music star Miranda Lambert, while she had split from the singer Gavin Rossdale, who is the father of her three sons.
“Gwen saved my life. Who else on earth could understand going through a high-profile divorce from another musician?” Shelton explained to Billboard in 2016. “You can’t even imagine the similarities in our divorces.”
The source said that Stefani “had a hard time seeing herself dating again” after her divorce, but after meeting Shelton, he quickly became “everything she could have ever asked for and more.” These days, the couple is happier than ever with one another.
“Gwen just loves sharing her life with Blake,” the insider said. “He gives her so many things that were missing from her life for years.”
