A heartfelt obituary that a South Carolina woman wrote for her golden retriever is going viral this week, bringing dog-lovers everywhere to tears.

Sallie Gregory Hammett, 30, wrote an obituary about her dog Charlie’s “little quirks” after he died earlier this month at the age of 7 following a battle with lymphoma. Hammett described the golden retriever as a peanut butter-and-banana-chowing, boyfriend-material-testing, fiercely loyal force of “unconditional love.”

“If we’re being honest, Charlie loved everything life had to offer,” read the obituary. “He was good at a lot of things, but he was best at unconditional love. He taught everyone he met about loving people and always seeing the good in everyone.”

Hammett adopted Charlie when he was only 8 weeks-old, and they had been inseparable ever since. When she met David, the man who would become her husband, Charlie’s immediate affectionate response to him was an early deciding factor in her determining that he was a good guy whom she should date.

“[David] loved him as much as I did, which I didn’t think was possible,” Hammett told CNN, going on to say that she and her husband loved Charlie’s eccentricities.

“When you put the peanut butter on the banana, I mean you would think it was just the best day of his life,” she said.

It always made Hammett and David laugh that Charlie was so oddly stubborn about refusing to use stairs.

“We never could figure out why, but he just needed a lot of encouragement to go upstairs,” she said.

After Charlie’s death on September 13, Hammett spent days mourning him before considering taking out an ad in a local paper. Instead, she decided to use her background in design to create a mockup newspaper-style obituary. Once she was finished, she posted it on Twitter, calling him “The best boy.”

The post has since gone viral, garnering over 100,000 likes as it touched the hearts of dog-lovers all over the place.

“His last days were so happy and will be cherished forever,” Hammett wrote. “In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you give all your pups some extra love in honor of Charlie.”
