It’s been fifteen years since country music star Carrie Underwood made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry on June 10, 2005. Since being inducted nearly three years later, she has become a regular at the legendary Nashville venue.
In a new interview with People Magazine, Underwood recalled her Opry debut, including an unforgettably unexpected encounter that she had with country music icon Loretta Lynn.
“It was a such whirlwind because it was right after I was on American Idol,” Underwood remembered of her debut. “I was backstage, and there were so many people I was meeting and taking pictures with. I just felt like everyone was excited I was there, which was great, because I was excited that I was there!”
She went on too talk about a moment from that night that definitely caught me off guard.”
“I was talking to Vince Gill ,” she said before pausing to joke about her casual name-dropping, “and somebody walked by me and smacked my rear.”
“It definitely caught me off guard for a second,” Underwood remembered, adding “and then I turned around, and that was my first time meeting Ms. Loretta Lynn!”
That’s definitely an experience that she’ll never forget!
Underwood went on to recount her favorite surprise at the Opry, which happened just before she was inducted.
“Definitely the night I was asked to become an Opry member by Randy Travis,” she said. “He walked out on stage right after I was done singing his song ‘I Told You So.'”
This comes months after Lynn, 88, took to Instagram to open up about the sadness that she feels at the turmoil in America.
“I’ve had to turn my head from the TV a lot in the last few days,” Lynn wrote in July. “It breaks my heart to see anyone mistreated in any way. I was taught that you treat others the way you want to be treated. That simple truth has served me well my whole life.”
“As I’ve watched the pain and the hurt so many are in right now, I’ve just prayed for our country. We need God now, more than ever,” she continued.
