Former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary on Saturday, paying tribute to one another on Instagram.
“Even with everything going on, I wanted to take a moment to say happy anniversary to the love of my life,” Barack wrote in his post. “Every day with @MichelleObama makes me a better husband, a better father, and a better human.”
“This year, while we appreciate all your well-wishes, what we’d really love is for each of you to reach out to one person in your life who might not vote,” he added. “Help them get registered. Help them make a plan to cast their ballot. Send them to iwillvote.com to get started. Happy anniversary, Miche. Love you.”
Michelle also took to Instagram to pay tribute to her husband.
“28 years with this one. 💕 I love @BarackObama for his smile, his character, and his compassion,” the former First Lady wrote. “So grateful to have him as a partner through everything life throws at us. And this year, we have a request for you — pick one person in your life who might not vote and make sure they do. Tell us about it in the comments! That’s an anniversary message of the best kind. Love you, Barack.”
This comes weeks after Michelle discussed how her marriage has survived quarantine, saying that Barack has had “limited time to get on my nerves” since he’s been busy finishing up his upcoming book.
“He’s sort of gotten on my nerves because I haven’t seen him enough,” she said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “He can’t win.”
On a recent episode of “The Michelle Obama Podcast,” Michelle opened up about her first few years of parenthood and how it affected her relationship with her husband, former President Barack Obama.
“The first tough years [in her marriage] came with kids. I had infertility issues, I was ready, I wanted kids, I worked hard for them, we were mature, we had been together for four or five years before, so we had a wonderful amount of time together which was helpful,” Michelle said, according to Hello Magazine. “But even with all of that, when these little people arrived and the whole process of pregnancy, conception, delivery and then they are there.”
“That can suck the life out of all of that hard work and all of that wisdom,” she added. “It’s hard to get ready for the wonderful joyfulness that is having children. They are amazing and I would not trade them in, but they can mess up a marriage.”
