A modern-day reboot of the iconic 1980s sitcom “Who’s The Boss” is reportedly in development, and the show’s original stars Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano are already set to reprise their roles in it.

Fox News reported that the reboot was announced on Tuesday by Sony Pictures Studios, which said that it will revolve around Danza’s character of Tony Micelli, a former ballplayer and now retired housekeeper, and Milano’s Samantha. The studio explained that Samantha is now a single mother living in the same home where the original series took place.

Danza and Milano are set to be producers of the series, as is veteran producer Norman Lear, who helped out with the remake of his original series “One Day at a Time.” Sony said in a statement that the new show “will explore generational differences, as well as opposing world views and parenting styles within the dynamic of a modern family in 2020,” in line with Lear’s other programs.

“Who’s the Boss?” was a smash hit for ABC during it’s eight year run from 1984 until 1992. While it was not necessarily loved by critics, ratings for the show were high throughout all of its 196 episodes.

Sony has left the door open for returns of stars Judith Light and Danny Pintauro. Light played Angela, who sparred with Danza’s character as his employer and eventual love interest. Meanwhile, Pintauro played Angela’s son Jonathan, who was also Samantha’s little brother.

Sony said that Light and Pintauro are “supportive of the new series,” adding that, “The cast remains very close to this day and the hope is to find creative ways to work them and their characters into the show.”

Katherine Helmond, who was the fifth regular cast member and played Angela’s mother Mona, tragically passed away in 2019 at the age of 89. Her character of Mona was immensely popular, earning her a Golden Globe as well as an Emmy nomination.

Both Danza and Milano have confirmed the reboot on their respective social media pages.

“Very excited to bring Who’s The Boss back to television! #whostheboss,” Danza wrote alongside a photo of himself and Milano in character on the original series.

Milano tweeted that she is “so excited” about the reboot.

“#WhosTheBoss is coming back!!! I’ve wanted to share this for so long and now I can!,” she wrote. “We feel the time is right to tell the story of where these amazing characters are today. Can’t wait to share their stories with you. So happy.”
