The singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson is speaking out to defend herself after she decided to dye her 6 year-old daughter River Rose’s hair purple.

“I put a purple streak in my daughter’s hair today and I swear to you she thinks she is as cool as Prince now,” Clarkson tweeted on Saturday. “Full on air guitar, singing at the top of her lungs, that is what’s happening… and before I get attacked for being the worst mom ever, it’s safe, organic paint.”

This comes at a difficult time for Clarkson, as she recently filed for divorce from River’s father, Brandon Blackstock.

“Kelly and Brandon had been having problems for several months and were making a conscious effort to work things out,” a source tells Entertainment Tonight. “They both hoped quarantining away from L.A. in Montana would help them work things out in their marriage, but instead the change in environment was actually detrimental. The constant time together seemed to make an already challenging situation worse.”

Just before filing for divorce, Clarkson herself had been open about the difficulties of being stuck in quarantine with her family in Montana amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’ve been in really close quarters and it’s been kind of nuts. I’m not going to lie,” Clarkson said back in May. “There’s definitely some cabin fever going on. It’s challenging being a working mom.”

Another source close to Clarkson said that quarantine was essentially the nail in the coffin for her marriage to Blackstock.

“It was a stressful time,” this insider said. “[Quarantining in Montana] exacerbated any issues.”

A different source explained that working together constantly was the nail in the coffin for Clarkson and Blackstock’s marriage.

“Kelly and Brandon work together nonstop and that became a contention in their relationship,” that insider told Entertainment Tonight. “Brandon is the [executive producer] of her show, as well as her manager.”

In the end, those close to Clarkson said that it will take time for her to heal from this.

“Kelly’s been through a lot, and she thought Brandon was her happily ever after,” said the source. “It’s very sad.”
