In the new documentary “‘The Queen: In Her Own Words,” it is revealed how the tumultuous time at the beginning of 2020 played out for Queen Elizabeth, as her grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle stepped down as senior members of the British royal family.

“In 2020 she beat Harry and Meghan in a war of words and proved herself to be the Queen of social media,” narrator Andrew Scarborough said in the documentary, according to the U.K. Express.

“It was a situation like a kettle which had been coming up to boil and it boiled over,” added royal expert Wesley Kerr. “They issued that sudden statement saying that they would be stepping back from their role as senior royals and that they had laid out what their terms would be.”

“#Megxit trended all over the world and dragged the Queen into a Twitterstorm,” Scarborough continued, before royal expert Ingrid Seward chimed in to say, “The statement came as a complete surprise to the Queen. She knew that they weren’t happy, she knew that they were in talks with her advisors but she had no idea they were going to put out their own statement.”

“Although the Queen had been caught off guard, a brief and concise tweet posted just hours later revealed that discussions were at an early stage,” Scarborough explained. “In just 34 friendly words, the Queen had taken back control of the situation.”

Royal expert Charles Crawford agreed with this statement, saying the Queen “basically put out this very short business-like statement which said this is where things stand.”

This comes after Harry took an apparent shot at the Queen when he called on her precious Commonwealth to follow others who have “acknowledged the past” and are “trying to right their wrongs,” while also admitting to having his own “unconscious bias.”

“When you look across the Commonwealth, there is no way that we can move forward unless we acknowledge the past,” Harry said. “So many people have done such an incredible job of acknowledging the past and trying to right those wrongs, but I think we all acknowledge there is so much more still to do.”

Meghan agreed with him, adding that it is time for a “reckoning” in which people should be putting their hands up to “own” their past wrongdoings.
