If Meghan Markle still had any hope that American taxpayers would somehow foot the bill for her lifestyle after her exit from the British royal family, they just got dashed when she was reminded that there is no chance of this actually happening.

Graham Smith is the CEO of an organization known as Republic, which campaigns to have the British monarchy abolished. He just spoke out to warn Meghan that American taxpayers will never agree to pay for her lifestyle, as she is considered a private citizen in the United States rather than a royal.

“I honestly think they need to pay for themselves,” Smith told the U.K. Express. “We don’t ask this question about anyone else, we don’t pick a random person out of the crowd and say let’s pay for that person. They are private citizens now and they should behave like that. I don’t think the US taxpayer would appreciate being asked to pick up the bill.”

“I don’t think the US taxpayer picks up the bill for Oprah Winfrey or Matt Damon,” Smith continued. “Why should they pick up the bill for Meghan Markle?”

Smith went on to blast the royal family in general, saying that British taxpayers should not be on the hook for paying for their lifestyles either.

“The cost is one symptom of why the monarchy should be abolished,” he said. “They get away with it because it is unaccountable. No one can get rid of them as individuals, they have to get rid of the whole institution.”

“They get away with it because they are secretive and do not reveal the information about money being spent and what they are getting up to behind closed doors,” Smith added. “We are supposed to be a democracy, we have argued about democracy and the will of the people for the last four years. We then don’t turn that same logic to the monarchy. So, it does not live up to the standards that we should expect of an institution in this country in this day and age.”

Meghan and her husband Prince Harry shocked the world earlier this year when they stepped down as senior members of the British royal family. They have since moved to Meghan’s hometown of Los Angeles, California, where they have been living in the $18 million mansion of Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry while they look for a home of their own in the area.
