Last week, we reported that lifestyle icon Martha Stewart had broken the internet by posting a sultry pool photo of herself that fans quickly dubbed a “thirst trap.” Now, Stewart is breaking her silence to give her thoughts on the image as well as its viral status.
When asked about fans labelling the photo a “thirst trap” during an interview with Entertainment Tonight host Nischelle Turner on Monday, Stewart at first said, “I don’t even know what that is.”
When Turner explained that the term just meant a sexy photo, the 78 year-old immediately agreed with her, saying, “That’s definitely a thirst trap.”

My pool in East Hampton is the place to be on a 89 degree day! When I built the pool thirty years ago it was designed to be as chlorine free as possible, with a natural concrete finish-no paint- and it fit in a long narrow space between the house and the property line. I made it extra deep for diving and with no protruding steps so we could really race the length without worrying about obstacles. After all these years, It is a fun place to swim!!!
Stewart went on to explain that she didn’t put much thought into this photo, saying that she “just thought I looked great coming out of the pool.”
“My camera came on backwards, you know, selfie mode, and I looked so nice,” she added. “The sun was on my face. I thought, ‘Oh, that looks pretty,’ so I took the picture. It looked good.”
The photo only went move viral after it was recreated by Chelsea Handler, and Stewart had a humorous comment on the imitation.
“Dear Chelsea, I’m so happy that you like my post well enough to emulate it,” Stewart commented on Handler’s photo. “I do think my pool is a little bit prettier than yours and that my facial expression is a little bit more relaxed. Nevertheless you are a beautiful girl and F**KING too young to be emulating me. Continue with your comedy, your humor, and your amazing ability to gather around you political liberals. We need it! Love Martha.”
In Monday’s interview, Stewart said that she and Handler are good friends.
“I just took up Chelsea Handler’s challenge to smoke a joint with her. I told her I haven’t smoked a joint since the 1960s. So for me to smoke a joint is a really big deal,” Stewart said. “We haven’t done it yet … it has to be together, some time in the future.”
Though Stewart is turning 79 on Monday, she is as confidant as ever, saying that she is still in her “heyday.”
“Just eat well, exercise well, garden, climb mountains,” she said when asked how she continues to look so good. “I climbed Kilimanjaro. For goodness sake, I went up into the Himalayas. You have to do that kind of stuff. That’s the kind of stuff that keeps one vibrant and young and it’s important.”
