It’s been five months since Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas passed away at the age of 103. Now, Academy Award-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones is opening up about what it was like to be the icon’s daughter-in-law.

In an interview with the British talk show “Lorraine,” Zeta-Jones talked about her fond memories of being Douglas’ daughter-in-law.

“He was such a man of strength,” the Chicago actress said of him.

“When you meet him he’s one of those men that he’s everything you expect a movie star to be.”

Zeta-Jones added that while she last saw her father-in-law ten days before his death, her husband Michael Douglas was by his side “right until the end.”

She went on to say that the family is planning to hold a memorial to “celebrate” his life as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic recedes enough for them to do so.

Zeta-Jones gave credit to Douglas and his widow Anne Buydens, as well as to her own parents, for giving her prime examples of what stable marriages are like.

“I have a great blueprint both with my own parents and Michael’s father and step-mother and what good marriage means and how precious that is and how you work at it and sustain it and appreciate it,” Zeta-Jones explained.

Zeta-Jones and her husband are preparing to celebrate their twentieth wedding anniversary in November.

When asked how they have handled being in quarantine together amidst coronavirus, she joked that she’s been the more “annoying” one in the relationship.

“I’m going to say me. I’m going to take it upon myself,” she said with a laugh.

“Imagine somebody that likes it super, super clean and all of a sudden I have a virus to deal with? It was like going into some NASA experimental program!”

Though Zeta-Jones acknowledged that her family went through a “very sad time” following Douglas’ death, she added that she and her husband have managed to stay positive by welcoming a new edition into their family.

“We have a new puppy!” Zeta-Jones exclaimed.

“He always takes the focus off anything that’s going a little awry.”

There’s nothing like a new puppy to make the long days of quarantine go by faster!
