Earlier this year, former “Star Trek” star William Shatner finalized his divorce from his fourth wife Elizabeth Martin, who he was married to for 18 years. Now, the 89 year-old icon is opening up for the first time about how he is coping with this divorce, and he wants his fans to know that he’s doing just fine.

“Nothing makes me sad at this age,” Shatner told the U.K.’s Mirror. “It’s all good here. I wish everyone well.”

Shatner had been married to the 61 year-old horse trainer since 2001, and many were stunned when he filed for divorce from her just four days after her brother passed away. However, it has since been noted that the couple had actually been separated since February of 2019, so it seems that the filing had been in the works for quite some time.

Since the divorce, Shatner has been keeping himself busy with his work, as he filmed the History Channel series “The UnXplained” just before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. The series looks into various types of strange phenomena, and Shatner clearly enjoyed working on it immensely.

“I was reading about UFOs which I’ve always discounted,” Shatner said. “I was a cynic, but as of late, I’m less disapproving. With new ways of photographing, we’re seeing what the person claims to have seen. There was film of what some air force people saw and there’s no explanation for it. What I don’t understand though is why they don’t land in front of 10 Downing Street or the White House.”

The legendary star is also making time to enjoy being single again, as he said he knows he is still seen as something of a hunk by his fans, despite his advanced age.

“A heartthrob at 89,” Shatner said with a laugh. “How does it feel to be a heartthrob at 89? Well… it heightens my blood pressure!”

He clearly has a lot to be happy about, as The Blast reported that court documents show that he was able to keep most of his $100 million fortune after the divorce. The outlet added that Shatner had an iron-clad pre-nuptial agreement in place that allowed him to keep his “Star Trek” royalties.

Shatner had previously been married to Gloria Rand, Marcy Lafferty, and Nerine Kidd, who tragically died in 1999 when she accidentally drowned in their pool. Though Shatner had filed for divorce from Kidd two years before her death, it had not yet been finalized, and he recalled in his 2018 memoir “Live Long and…What I Learned Along the Way” that he struggled with serious grief after her death.

“After my third wife, Nerine, drowned in our swimming pool, I was twisted in grief. I was completely lost. Nerine was an alcoholic and I had failed to save her,” Shatner wrote. “My grief was overwhelming. This was the type of pain that makes you think either I’m simply going to die, or I’m going to kill myself.”

Thankfully, Shatner was able to overcome this grief, and he’s still going strong all these years later.
