Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are under fire today after it was revealed that their brief stay in Canada cost taxpayers over $40,000.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation, a citizens advocacy group that fights for lower taxes, has allegedly obtained documents stating that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spent CA$56,384 on security costs for the British royals from Nov. 18, 2019 to Jan. 19, 2020. Fox News reported that this number is over $40,000 when converted to American dollars.

Aaron Wudrick, federal director for the advocacy group, pointed out that this security bill “could have easily turned into millions” had Meghan and Harry stayed on Vancouver, rather than choosing to move to Los Angeles, California. The couple had moved to Vancouver immediately after stepping down as members of the British royal family, spending a few weeks there before relocating to Meghan’s hometown of L.A., where they remain at this time.

“More than $50,000 is nothing to sneeze at, especially when you consider the fact that this is taxpayers’ money covering bills for one of the most famous and wealthy couples in the world,” Wudrick explained.

Making matters worse is the fact that the group has pointed out that the documents don’t even show the salaries of the officers on duty, as it “only” shows the costs relating to “overtime, travel, meals, incidentals and accommodations.”

Meghan and Harry’s security costs were a controversial topic in Canada from the moment the couple got there, with over 80,000 Canadians signing a petition in January demanding that they foot the bill for their own security. Officials with the Canadian government quickly gave in and announced that they would no longer fund the couple’s security after March, which was when their royal status would officially expire.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex choosing to relocate to Canada on a part-time basis presented our government with a unique and unprecedented set of circumstances,” Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said at the time. “The RCMP has been engaged with officials in the U.K. from the very beginning regarding security considerations.”

He added that since Meghan and Harry were still “Internationally Protected Persons” at that time, the government was obligated to provide them security on an “as-needed basis.”

Once Meghan and Harry moved to California, President Donald Trump immediately made it known that American taxpayers will not be paying for their security in any way. The couple responded by claiming that they had never planned to ask for their security to be covered by American taxpayers.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have no plans to ask the U.S. government for security resources,” a spokesperson for the couple said. “Privately funded security arrangements have been made.”
