Daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has found herself in hot water this week after she posted and then was forced to delete a tweet about the ongoing racial protests going on across the United States.

DeGeneres was hit with a wave of backlash after she posted a tweet last weekend about the death of George Floyd, with social media users taking offense to the fact that DeGeneres referenced “people of color” instead of “black people” specifically.

“Like so many of you, I am angry and I am sad,” DeGeneres wrote, according to Fox News. “People of color in this country have faced injustice for far too long. For things to change, things must change. We must commit ourselves to this change with conviction and love.”

The backlash against Degeneres was swift, with social media users letting her know that she had used the wrong terminology.

After deleting the tweet, DeGeneres posted a video in which she broke down in tears while talking about the death of Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota last week.

“I haven’t spoken directly because I don’t know what to say. I am so sad, and I am so angry,” DeGeneres said in the video. “I know I’m not going to say the right thing, I know there are going to be a lot of people who are in disagreement with what I say, but I have a platform and I have a voice and I have always stood for equality.”

“I’ve always wanted to be the voice for people who felt like they didn’t have a voice, because I know what that feels like,” she added. “Maybe you don’t agree with how it’s coming out, but you have to understand it, and then we can heal it.”

“I’m just so sorry that it’s come to this,” DeGeneres continued. “I really don’t know what to say other than this has gone on way, way, way too long. People have got away with murder. That’s what’s happening. We’ve got to see fairness and justice for all, because right now this is not a fair world, not at all.”

However, even this did not stop the backlash, as social media users questioned whether DeGeneres had really made a donation, as she’d promised to in the video’s caption.

Once America’s sweetheart, it seems that DeGeneres just can’t win these days.
