California Gov. Gavin Newsom just announced that production of movies and television shows can resume in his state next week.

Fox News reported that production on all Hollywood films and shows have been shut down since March amidst the coronavirus pandemic, and the industry is aching to get up and running again.

On Monday, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers drafted a 22-page “white paper” on this topic before submitting it to officials in New York, California and Los Angeles County.

Union officials have responded by saying that job-by-job protocols still need to be worked out, calling for regular testing of crew members, six-foot physical distancing, and the widespread use of face coverings.

Universal film chief Donna Langley issued a plea to county officials on Tuesday asking them to review the white paper in a timely manner and to lift restrictions so that production could resume as soon as possible.

“If there is any delay in lifting overall restrictions on filming activities based on protocols and procedures outlined in the white paper, we’d like you to identify and authorize certain sector roles and job functions that can immediately resume with appropriate safety protocols in place,” Langley said, according to Variety.

Newsom gave his blessing on Friday for production to resume again, also allowing sporting events to take place without spectators, subject to labor agreement and local approval

“As we continue to release guidance on how different sections can reopen with modifications, it is important to remember guidance doesn’t mean ‘go,’” Dr. Sonia Angell, the director of the CDPH, said in a statement.

“Your local health officer will make the final decision about which sectors will open, guided by data specific to your community.”

California Department of Public Health issued the following statement via the Governor’s office:

“Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020, and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations following their review of local epidemiological data including cases per 100,000 population, rate of test positivity, and local preparedness to support a health care surge, vulnerable populations, contact tracing and testing. To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers. Back office staff and management should adhere to Office Workspace guidelines published by the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Industrial Relations, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.”

The entire nation has been effectively shut down for weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Hollywood being able start filming productions again will do wonders for the morale of Americans everywhere who are craving entertainment more than ever before.
