We previously reported that the wife of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who has been arrested for the murder of George Floyd has filed for divorce from him. Now, it’s been revealed that Kellie Chauvin has said in her filing that she does not want a penny from the disgraced ex-cop going forward.
Daily Mail obtained court documents stating that Kellie, a 45 year-old former beauty queen, was divorcing her husband due to the “irretrievable breakdown” of their relationship. She explained that the couple officially split on May 28, three days after Chauvin was captured on camera kneeling on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes before his death.
“The parties have been separated since May 28, 2020,” the filing reads. “There has been an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage relationship of the parties within the definition of Minn. Stat. 518.06, and the marriage cannot be saved.”
Though Kellie is a realtor who is currently unemployed, the mother of two sons from a previous relationship said in her filing that she does not want any money from Chauvin.
“Respondent is full capable of supporting herself,” her filing states.
Kellie, a former Mrs Minnesota America pageant who came to the U.S. from Laos as a refugee when she was a child, also applied to have her name changed. She previously was employed as a radiologist at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, the same facility where Floyd would later die.
Kellie stated silent for days last week as the video of her husband made the rounds before releasing a statement to let the world know that her thoughts were with Floyd and his family.
“This evening, I spoke with Kellie Chauvin and her family. She is devastated by Mr. Floyd’s death and her utmost sympathy lies with his family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy,” her attorney Amanda Mason-Sekula said on her behalf. “While Ms. Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.”
While competing in the beauty contest Mrs. Minnesota America in 2018, Kellie talked about her husband, saying, “Under all that uniform, he’s just a softie.”
“He’s such a gentleman. He still opens the door for me, still puts my coat on for me. After my divorce, I had a list of must-haves if I were ever to be in a relationship, and he fit all of them,’
