Prince William has just opened up in a new interview about how becoming a father has been “life-changing” for him.

In the new BBC documentary “Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health,” William talked about becoming a dad, saying that “having children is the biggest life-changing moment.” In the documentary, William talked to a few different athletes, including  Marvin Sordell, who grew up without a father. William can relate to this, as he lost his mother Princess Diana back in 1997, when she died in a car crash.

“I think when you’ve been through something traumatic in life — and that is like you say your dad not being around, my mother dying when I was younger — your emotions come back in leaps and bounds because it’s a very different phase of life,” said William, 37, according to Us Weekly. “And there’s no one there to, kind of, help you, and I definitely found it very, at times, overwhelming.”

William went on to say that he has a great parenting partner in his wife Kate Middleton.

“We go through those moments together and we kind of evolve and learn together,” he said.

Together, William and Kate are parents to George, 6, Charlotte, 5, and Louis, 2.

“I think emotionally, things come out of the blue that you don’t ever expect or maybe you think you’ve dealt with and so I can completely relate to what you’re saying about children coming along, it’s one of the most amazing moments of life, but it’s also one of the scariest,” William explained.

William told Sordell that his father “would be very proud of” him.

“So would your mom,” the athlete replied, to which William said, “I appreciate that.”

It’s clear that becoming a father has had a major impact on William.

“Having children is the biggest life-changing moment. It really is,” William said. “When you’ve been through something traumatic in life, that is, your dad not being around, my mother dying when I was younger, your emotions come back in leaps and bounds because it’s a very different phase of life, and there’s no one there to kind of help you.”

“Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health” will be airing on BBC One this coming Thursday.
