Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves are being praised this week after they teamed up to deliver 110,000 race masks to hospitals in rural Texas.

“Thanks to @lincoln for donating 110 thousand masks – me and @camilamcconaughey hitting the road to get em to rural hospitals in need across Texas,” McConaughey captioned an Instagram photo that showed him and Alves preparing to deliver the crucial PPE materials.

McConaughey has been vocal about our country taking protective measures as we continue to battle the coronavirus pandemic.

“Science is behind us right now and the mask is about letting science catch up,” McConaughey told CNN earlier in the month. “It’s about helping the people on the frontline, don’t let happen what happened in New York where there’s two patients for every bed, we’ve got to buy time. A mask is a very good tool for that and I have not heard any science saying that it’s not so I don’t even know how there’s any real argument about wearing a mask or not.”

Daily Mail reported that early in the COVID-19 pandemic, McConaughey spoke out to comfort his fans, reminding them that we will get through this.

“Hey everybody, McConaughey here, just want to say that in these crazy times that we’re in with the coronavirus, let’s take care of ourselves and each other,” he said back in March. “Let’s not go to the lowest common denominator and get paranoid. Let’s do our due diligence, take the precautions we need to take care of ourselves and those of us around us.”

“So, in this time when people are going to move on, the economy is going to be in shambles for who knows how long, there is a green light on the other side of this red light that we’re in right now,” McConaughey continued. “I believe that green light is going to be built upon the values that we can enact right now. Values of fairness, kindness, accountability, resilience, respect, courage. If we practice those things right now, when we get out of this, this virus, this time might be the one time that brings us all together and unifies us like we have not been in a long time.”

“So, yes, let’s see if we can make some lemonade out of this lemon that we’re living in the middle of,” he concluded. “Turn a red light into a green light and just keep living.”
