When a fan recently tried to give some hand-made protective face masks to Willie Nelson and his wife, the legendary singer was able to find a way to turn the kind gesture into a charitable endeavor to help even more people.

Fox News reported that Tanya Boike and Monica Cabazos of Houston, Texas had been trying to help their community amid the coronavirus pandemic by making and distributing face masks. Since they are both huge fans of Nelson, they decided to gift him one of their masks, but they soon learned from his grandaughter, Noelle Ward, that the musician had something else in mind.

“[Noelle] texted me a few minutes later and said ‘pops would rather sign these and have them auction them off. That way you can get more materials and keep making these masks for free.’ I just lost it. That’s not what I had made them for,” Boike told KTRK.

The signed masks soon ended up on CharityAuctionsToday website, and as of this writing, they have raised nearly $4,500 that will go towards helping Boike and Cabazos produce more masks. Prior to this auction, they were able to give 500 masks to people, and this will help them give their masks to even more folks!

The two explained that they were inspired to launch this effort by how the community rallied when Hurricane Harvey devastated the area back in 2017.

“I remembered about us as a community during Harvey and the flooding we had. I said, everybody was helping each other,” said Cabazos.

While Nelson has not yet commented on this situation, his niece explained that his move to sign and auction the masks is just how he thinks.

“Well, that’s him. That’s who he is. That’s him every day. He’s just relaxed. He’s just giving. He’s just got a great smile, and he’s just the best,” Ward said.

This comes a week after Nelson held a livestreaming event with celebrities and singers on Monday, April 20 to help benefit coronavirus relief efforts. He has always seemed like the kind of down-to-earth star who would step up in a crisis like this, so it’s nice to see him actually doing it!
