Hollywood star Tom Hanks hosted the first ever remote, pre-recorded episode of “Saturday Night Live” last night after he successfully beat coronavirus with his wife Rita Wilson.

“It is a strange time to try to be funny, but trying to be funny is ‘SNL’’s whole thing, so we thought ‘What the heck!’” Hanks said as he gave his monologue standing by his refrigerator.

“Why me as host?” Hanks asked. “Well, for one, I have been the celebrity canary in the coal mine for the coronavirus, and ever since being diagnosed, I have been more like America’s dad than ever before,” because, he joked, no one wants to be around him very much and he makes people uncomfortable.

Hanks and his wife were two of the first celebrities to admit that they had been diagnosed with COVID-19, as they received the diagnosis last month while filming a movie in Australia. They have since both made full recoveries from the virus that has killed thousands all over the world.

“In fact, this suit, this is the first time I’ve worn anything other than sweatpants since March 11,” Hanks said. “My wife had to help me put it on cause I forgot how buttons work.”

“We have a great show for you tonight,” he added at the conclusion of his monologue. “Now is it going to look a little different than what you’re used to? Yes. Will it be weird to see sketches without big sets and costumes? Sure. But, will it make you laugh? Eh. It’s ‘SNL.’ There’ll be some good stuff, maybe one or two stinkers, you know the drill.”

The show opened with all of the cast members of the NBC sketch comedy show appearing from their homes on Zoom. They then performed their own homemade sketches that were perfect for YouTube!

Chris Martin was the musical guest for the episode, which also included appearances by Larry David, Alec Baldwin, Adam Sandler and Tina Fey. The episode was historic in that it was the first pre-recorded episode in the 45 year history of “Saturday Night Live.”

With everything going on in the world today, it’s important to find ways to laugh when possible, and there’s no better way to do that then by kicking back and watching “Saturday Night Live!”
