A man was just arrested in South Carolina after he robbed a restaurant cook who was preparing free meals for healthcare workers that are currently on the frontlines fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fox News reported that 28 year-old Rashard Ashun Holmes Sr. stormed into the Toast of Charleston on April 17 and stole a bag from a worker who was busy preparing the food in the kitchen. The bag belonged to restaurant cook David Lennex-Capps, and it contained cash, credit and debit cards, and both his house and car keys.

At tie time of the robbery, Lennex-Capps was preparing 55 free meals for MUSC Health as part of the facility’s “Full Belly, Full Hearts” campaign. The restaurant’s website states that the meals are donated every day of the week to hospital workers and first responders as well as to healthcare workers who have been laid off and their families.

Lennex-Capps, who has worked at the restaurant for ten years, told WCVI-TV that the robbery left him feeling disheartened.

“It just sucks that in these times that I am working at an establishment, doing such good for the community, a scoundrel like this takes advantage of an opportunity and steals my stuff,” he said.

The robbery was caught on surveillance video, which was shared on social media as Holmes remained on the run for days after the indecent.

It took over a week to apprehend Holmes, but he was finally caught and charged with petty larceny.

As of Tuesday, 5,735 South Carolinians had been infected with coronavirus, which has killed 192 people in the state. The virus continues to wreak havoc on the United States and on the world at large, killing hundreds of thousands of people all over the globe.

It’s sad that in a time when we should all be coming together to do our part to fight this virus, criminals are seeing the opportunity to prey on others. This serves as a reminder that we unfortunately can’t ever let our guards down, even in the midst of a crisis such as this one. Please be mindful of protecting yourself and your possessions, even when you are trying to do something kind for others!
