Country music legend Dolly Parton has been going above and beyond over the past few days to help her fans get through quarantine. Now, the 74 year-old icon is stepping up once again to share a video of herself reciting a poem that is themed around social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The video opens with Parton shouting at someone off-camera, making it seem like there is chaos in her home.
“Can you hold it down in there? I’m trying to do a video in the studio,” the singer shouts. “What? My accountant’s calling? Well, tell him to kiss my assets goodbye because they’re dwindling to nothing. No, you can’t put a mask on a turtle!”
Parton then shifts her attention to the camera and reveals she’s written about the COVID-19 crisis that we are all facing.
“This too shall pass, as all things will / if the virus don’t kill us, the stay at home will / the kids are bored and restless / they scream and yell and squawk / and the teens and tweens, they’re just plain mean / they bite your bleepin’ head off,” she began.
Parton went on to poke fun at couples who have had a difficult time quarantining with their partners.
“And all those lovin’ couples that were once so sweet and cozy / now the fight like cats and dogs, like Donald [Trump] and [Nancy] Pelosi,” she said. “Lord, get us back to school and get us back to work / and get us out of this God dang house ‘fore someone gets hurt.”
Parton ended the poem by expressing hope for a vaccine.
“And Lord, please find a vaccination in the form of a shot or a pill / ’cause if the virus don’t kill us, the stayin’ home will,” she recited.
Once the poem was complete, Parton again shouted at someone off camera.
“Stop it about the toilet paper!” she exclaimed, before turning back to the camera and saying, “I got things to do.”
This came one day after Parton paid tribute to her longtime friend and collaborator Kenny Rogers, who passed away at the age of 81 last month, by performing his hit song “Sweet Music Man” on the special “CMT Giants: Kenny Rogers.”
