As calls have grown for prison inmates to be released due to fears that they will catch coronavirus, many have wondered whether disgraced comedian Bill Cosby would be set free. Now, a state corrections official in Pennsylvania is speaking out to say that there is no way that this will happen.

“Sex offenders are not eligible under the reprieve criteria,” a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections spokesperson told Fox News.

Cosby is currently serving up to 10 years for sexual assault, and this news that there is no chance for his release came as a shock to his spokesman Andrew Wyatt, who said last month that he was worried about the 82 year-old’s wellbeing.

“I’m very concerned for Mr. Cosby’s health in prison during the Coronavirus epidemic,” Wyatt said. “The reason: Mr. Cosby is elderly and blind — and always needs to be escorted around the prison by support service inmates, known as Certified Peer Specialists (CPI).”

“Those inmates could fall victim to the Coronavirus and easily spread the disease to Mr. Cosby as they wheel him around in a wheelchair,” he added. “Among their duties, the inmates bring Mr. Cosby to the infirmary for his doctor appointments and clean his cell.”

Wyatt told reporters on Saturday that Cosby’s status as a sex offender should not mean that he can’t serve out his sentence at home, as three staff members at the entertainer’s prison have already died of COVID-19.

“Because of this pandemic, criteria across this country have been thrown out the window. They have shut down entire states. No one’s making money. The government’s stimulus package was put in place to help people through this pandemic,” Wyatt said. “All elderly inmates like Mr. Cosby could succumb to this virus. It seems it’s more politically motivated and personally motivated to not let this man out. It’s very upsetting and disappointing.”

Cosby is currently incarcerated at SCI Phoenix facility in Montgomery County, and confusion over the chances of his release has grown after Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf ordered officials to relocate some current prisoners to their homes or “community corrections facilities.”

Cosby was sent to prison after he was accused of drugging and raping numerous women over the years during his time as one of the most beloved entertainers in the U.S. Should he be released for any reason, there would undoubtedly be a massive outcry from his victims and those who support them.
