Nearly one year after all charges against “Empire” star Jussie Smollett were dropped for allegedly lying about a being the victim of a hate crime, he has found himself being indicted on charges related to this situation once again.

Special prosecutor Dan Webb announced Tuesday afternoon that Smollett has been indicted on six counts for allegedly lying to police about being the victim of a racist and homophobic hate crime in January of 2019. Fox32 reported that Webb announced the indictment with the following statement:

“Dan K. Webb, special prosecutor for Cook County, today announced that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (“OSP”) has now completed all of its investigative steps regarding Jussie Smollett, and has made the decision to further prosecute Mr. Smollett.  Based on the recommendation of the OSP, a Cook County grand jury returned a six-count indictment charging Jussie Smollett with making four separate false reports to Chicago Police Department officers related to his false claims that he was the victim of a hate crime, knowing that he was not the victim of a crime.”

Smollett had told police that he was assaulted by two men as he walked home from the subway at around 2am one winter night in Chicago, according to Fox News. He claimed that the two men, at least one of whom he said was white, tied a noose around his neck as they taunted him with racist and homophobic slurs. Smollett also alleged that the men yelled, “this is MAGA country,” a reference to the slogan of President Donald Trump and his supporters.

Weeks later, however, Chicago police concluded their investigation into the incident by alleging that Smollett had lied about the attack and paid two of his friends to stage it with him because he wanted a raise on his show “Empire.” The friends, Nigerian brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo, confirmed that they had been paid by Smollett to carry out the attack.

Smollett was soon hit with many charges related to staging a hate crime, and he was facing 50 years in prison before prosecutor Kim Foxx suddenly dropped all charges against him, much to the dismay of Americans everywhere that wanted to see him brought to justice.

After mass outrage over the charges being dropped from both the Chicago police and the public, Webb was brought in to take a second look at the case. Smollett is now due to appear in court on February 24 to answer to the new charges against him.

It has been obvious to many Americans that Smollett attempted to use the racial and political tensions that are currently in the United States for his own personal gain. In alleging that his attackers made MAGA references, he played upon the fact that members of the liberal media are so anti-Trump supporters that they’ll believe they committed virtually any act of violence, even when there’s no proof.

We’re glad that Webb wrote this wrong by indicting Smollett again, and we look forward to seeing him in court. After over year, it’s time for justice to be served.
