Valerie Harper, the award-winning star of sitcoms “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Rhoda,” passed away on Friday morning at the age of 80. Her death came after a decade-long battle with cancer and a month-long stay in hospice care.

On her 80th birthday six days before her death, Harper told her social media followers that she was “in good spirits” and having “a wonderful day.” Harper was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009 before being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2013. Despite only being given months to live, Harper managed to fight through and survive for the next six years. The Golden Globe winning actress is survived by her husband Tony Cacciotti as well as her daughter Cristina.

“I think she wants people to continue loving one another and continue bringing joy into the world in any way that they know how,” Cristina said last month. “And I think she does hope that at the end of the day her legacy of love will live on…I think she’s more afraid for my dad than anything. He lives for my mom.”

After her death, Harper’s “Mary Tyler Moore” costar Ed Asner took to Twitter to honor her, writing that he’d see her “soon.”

“A beautiful woman, a wonderful actress, a great friend and with balls bigger than mine,” Asner wrote. “Her brilliance burst through and shined its light upon all of us. Goodnight beautiful. I’ll see you soon.”

Harper will be dearly missed by millions of fans all over the globe. Find out more about her in the video below.
