Cale Wrenn is a 14 year-old freshman at Reidsville High School in North Carolina who was having a hard time making friends after his first day of school, but then a group of kind-hearted upperclassmen turned everything around for him.

Cale was having trouble adjusting to being in high school, and the adjustment was made even more difficult for him by students who were bullying him for being short. Cale confided in his older sister Leah Edwards about his situation, telling her that he had been forced to eat lunch alone because the other kids thought he “was a loser.” Heartbroken by what she heard, Leah took to Twitter to post screenshots of her text conversation with her brother, asking her followers to send reassuring messages to him.

Leah’s post quickly went viral and caught the attention of some older classmates at Cale’s school. Demontez Canada, who is a member of the football and basketball teams, was one student who saw the tweet.

“We decided to catch [Cale] off guard at lunch and have lunch with him and show him around the school and make sure he was OK and give him new friends,” he said.

Sure enough, Demontez and several other members of the basketball team and the school’s Boys to Men Club sat with Cale at lunch and took him under their wing.

Cale could not believe how kind the older students were being to him, and their actions meant the word to the boy.

“It felt really nice to know that there are people who care,” he said.

Cale is hoping his story will help other bullied kids stay positive. While talking to reporters, he made sure to thank his big sister for “probably the best experience” of his life.
