A touching video is going viral this week showing the moment a 6 year-old boy is surprised with a puppy by his family after he saved up spare change for 18 months to buy one.

Xander Mellor, 6, was visiting his grandparents in Springfield, Illinois when he was presented with the surprise puppy. His mom Natalie Ellenburg recorded the moment as they stood at the backdoor looking out at the garden. The video opens with them fumbling with the door as Xander walks outside.

“Go look,” Natalie tells him as he walks out onto the driveway. She then tells him to hold out his hands and keep his eyes closed.

“Okay, I’m not going to move,” Xander can be heard saying as his grandmother adjusts his hands. Once he’s in the perfect position, she places a tiny brown and black puppy in his arms!

When Xander opens his eyes, his mouth opens wide in astonishment.

“What do you think?” his mom asks him. As Xander starts to say that he loves it, he can’t help but burst into tears. The video ends with his family trying to comfort him as he clutches the puppy to his chest.

Natalie explained afterwards that her son had saved every bit of change he had received for a year and a half in the hopes of buying a puppy.

“Whenever I got back from work, I’d empty my pockets and give him all the change left from the day,” she said. “However, he did not know he was going to get his puppy so soon as I’d told him we needed to fill one more jar. This is the first puppy we’ve ever had and we’ve named him Marshmallow, Mello for short.”

Xander could not be happier with his new little friend!
