Sheep cats are the latest animals to become viral sensations, as internet users just can’t get enough of them!
Officially known as a breed called Selkirk Rex, the cats are characterized by their curly hair, and they even have curly whiskers! Take a look at these adorable cats for yourself.
The Selkirk Rex is a relatively new house cat breed, as it has only been around since 1987, when a Montana cat breeder named Jeri Newman found a curly-haired cat at an animal shelter. Jeri then bred the cat with a Persian, and he was officially recognized for the new breed by the Cat Fanciers Association in 1992.
Every Selkirk Rex is descended from Newman’s original cat, named Miss DePesto. Selkirk Rexes typically have chunky builds, and they can have long or short hair. They can also be born into the same litter as straight-haired cats, and they have a dense coat that his comprised of three layers, but does not require much grooming.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association has warned that owning one of these cats is not for the faint of heart.
“This breed is not for the uptight organized pet owner,” the association’s site warns. “These cats’ humans must be prepared to take all kinds of hair jokes such as: ‘The cat with the bad hair day.'”
