Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have found themselves in hot water this week as they have been accused of being hypocrites for taking four private jet flights in 11 days this summer while also preaching about the importance of fighting climate change. Now, Harry is speaking out to try and defend his family from the backlash they have received.

Harry appeared in Amsterdam on Monday to reveal his new Travalyst initiative, which aims to encourage people to make more environmentally-friendly choices while traveling. As he revealed the travel plan, Harry said “We could all do better.”

“We could all do better, and while no one is perfect, we all have a responsibility for our own individual impact. The question is what we do to balance it all out,” Harry said. “So today, after two years of behind-the-scenes conversations and planning, we’re going to start with the tourism industry.”

Harry went on to claim that he usually flies commercial.

“I came here by commercial. I spend 99 per cent of my life traveling the world by commercial,” the royal said. “Occasionally there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure that my family are safe. It’s genuinely as simple as that.”

Social media users, however, were not buying it.

“Prince Harry: When I fly by private jet, it’s to keep my family safe. Well lend me your jet so I can keep MY family safe, what a dumb comment by Harry,” one social media user commented, with another adding, “Prince Harry saying that he only flies private jet to ‘protect his family’ is RUBBISH. Prince William who will actually be KING one day doesn’t even do that! It’s just an excuse to travel in luxury! #Hypocrites.”

“Harry your brother who is 2nd in line to the throne just flew on a Flybe jet, il sure if there were security risks involved they’d have plonked him on a private plane so what’s your excuse?” a third user wrote.
