An Indiana couple who have been accused of abandoning their 11 year-old daughter in an apartment before they moved to Canada are now saying that she was really a 22 year-old woman who had been conning people about her age for years.

Kristine and Michael Barnett, who are now separated, adopted the girl from Ukraine back in 2010 even though she lacked a birth certificate. Doctors guessed that she was between 8 and 10 years of age, and they also diagnosed her with a bone-growth disorder that manifested in dwarfism.

Kristine told reporters last week that the adoption ended up being a scam, with the girl being a “diagnosed psychopath and sociopath” who “made a career of perpetuating her age façade.” She also handed reporters what she claimed was a doctor’s note stating that her daughter had secondary sexual characteristics of an adult woman. The note added that the girl was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2012 and was diagnosed with a sociopathic personality disorder.

After this diagnosis, Kristine and Michael went to Indiana probate court to have the girl’s official age changed to 22. They moved to Canada the next year with their other children, leaving the girl in a Lafayette, Indiana apartment that they paid for.

A police source said that the girl was evicted in 2014, at which time she was taken in by neighbors. It is unknown where the girl is at this time.

Last week, Kristine and Michael were hit with felony child neglect charges after a five year investigation, and they each turned themselves into custody earlier today. After the charges were filed, Kristine took to Facebook to claim that she is innocent.

“I am sick and devastated from the idea of any of these charges and maintain that they are false charges,” she wrote. “Friends and family you decide if what you are reading is real or fake for yourselves.”
