Florida ‘Storm Troopers’ Bring Home 250 Shelter Animals Before Hurricane Dorian

Last week, Florida residents were terrified that their state would be left devastated by Hurricane Dorian. Though most of the state was spared from the worst of the hurricane, those who live there still prepared for the worst. For one Florida animal shelter, this preparation meant finding homes for over 250 animals in order for them to be safe.

The Jacksonville Humane Society took to social media to look for “storm troopers” who could take in the animals.

We are currently seeking Storm Trooper foster families to care for our pets until at least Friday, September 6,” JHS wrote.

This morning, in coordination with @bestfriendsanimalsociety, JHS evacuated 6 dogs and 21 cats to create space in our shelter so that we can assist other communities and take in displaced animals after #HurricaneDorian passes. Our pets are currently en route to no-kill partner shelters well out of the storm’s path. Thank you to @bestfriendsanimalsociety for making this transport possible! If you would like to donate to help pets in times of disaster or crisis, visit jaxhumane.org/donate or use our bio link and click the “Donate” button. Choose the designation “For the Care of the Animals.” You can help us continue to empty our kennels by taking advantage of our #LaborDay weekend free adoption special. All adoptions are free now through Labor Day. Our team will help you choose a pet that will be a good fit for your home,” the post continued. “We will provide Storm Trooper fosters with food, leashes, and collars.”

Tons of volunteers ended up showing up wanting to be storm troopers. Thanks to them taking the animals home, shelter staffers were able to focus their attention on animals with special medical needs throughout the storm.

In just three days, the JHS was able to get all of the animals to temporary housing before the hurricane.

Your response to our call for help was tremendous, and we can’t thank everyone enough for their generosity and support. We feel so incredibly lucky to be a part of such a kind, compassionate community 🧡,” JHS wrote alongside a photo of empty kennels.

We applaud each and every one of these storm troopers for stepping up to help animals who needed it! Find out more in the video below.
