An elderly British couple is facing up to twelve years in prison after they were arrested for drug trafficking while on a cruise vacation. They have since claimed that they are innocent and were tricked into smuggling the drugs by a mysterious businessman, but police aren’t buying it.

Roger and Sue Clarke were arrested back in December after police found nine kilos (20 pounds) of cocaine hidden inside four travel cases in their cabin on a cruise ship near Lisbon, Portugal. They have since alleged that they had no idea the drugs were there, claiming that a Jamaican businessman named Lee paid for their cruises and simply asked them to pick up “empty” cases from a middleman. They also said that Lee asked them to buy exotic fruit for him.

Roger and Sue have both previously been convicted for trafficking cannabis resin near Norway back in 2010.

In regard to the current case against them, authorities are not buying their story and think the couple made contact with drug trafficking organizations multiple times from 2017 to 2018. Police say that Roger, 72, and Sue, 71, were living off about $1,106 a month, yet they were somehow able to afford approximately $22,500 on luxury cruises over a two-year period. A diary found in the couple’s possession stated that they had traveled to Brazil, Cuba and the Caribbean.

The couple is scheduled to appear in a Lisbon court this week, and they are expected to deny the charges. They have both been in custody in Lisbon since their arrest in December, and they are facing up to twelve years in jail if convicted.
