On the episode of the reality television show “Dance Moms” that aired on August 19, the ALDC continued it’s group dance winning streak with a performance inspired by Bob Fosse.

Abby Lee Miller explained to the girls that the legendary choreographer Fosse is her “hero” and that she wanted them all to understand his unique style and the effect it had on the history of dance.

“I just think it’s so important to any dancer that really wants to do this for a living that you understand those forefathers of dance,” Abby said.

Fosse was known in the 50s, 60s, and 70s for being both a choreographer and director who developed his own unique choreography style. His dance routines typically included hip thrusts, sharp hand movements, and vaudeville-style feet and shoulder positions. Examples of his work can still be seen today in movies like The Pajama Game and Cabaret as well as in the musical play Chicago.

As she choreographed this “Dance Moms” routine, Abby focused on Fosse’s rendition of the frug. This dance move was started in the 1960s, after it evolved from the twist. It ended up featuring Fosse’s favorite hip shakes and isolated arm and leg movements, and it can be seen in his movie Sweet Charity with a performance called “The Rich Man’s Frug.”

The moms were worried at first when they learned Abby wanted to do a Fosse-style routine, as his choreography is very difficult and rarely featured at dance competitions.

“If we have a judge that doesn’t know Fosse, they’re gonna be like, ‘Why are they even doing this? It’s weird,'” said one of the moms. “And then if we have a judge does know Fosse, they’re gonna be able to pick out every little thing they’re doing wrong, just like a ballet dance.”

Abby even acknowledged that doing a routine revolving around “The Frug” was not a safe choice, especially two weeks before nationals.

“Of course I’m taking a risk by doing a Fosse number,” Abby said. “This isn’t competition material. But there’s intricate little pieces of choreography that they can’t mess up.”

The end result, however, was nothing short of spectacular. Check it out for yourself in the video below.
