A 21 year-old Texas hotel employee is being hailed as a hero after he went above and beyond to help dozens of people who were trapped inside his hotel amidst torrential flooding earlier this week.

Satchel Smith usually manages the front desk at Homewood Suites in Beaumont, and he was just expecting to work his normal eight hour shift when his dad dropped him off there last Wednesday. However, he ended up working a much longer shift than that when Tropical Storm Imelda ripped through the area, blocking many local roadways.

Satchel soon found himself as the only employee managing the hotel with 90 guests trapped inside, and he rose to the occasion of helping them like he was born to do it. Angela Chandler, one of the guests who was in the hotel, snapped a photo of Satchel and posted it to social media to praise him for his conduct.

“Satchel has been here all night,” she wrote. “His coworkers couldn’t make it to work so he stayed. He has manned the phones, answered each of our questions, ensured that we have had a hot cup of coffee or tea, and helped serve us a hot breakfast. He has handled this situation with grace, kindness, and a beautiful smile on his face.”

For 36 straight hours, Satchel acted as the hotel’s manager, front desk attendant, maintenance man, and kitchen crew. Many of the guests stepped up to help him serve the meals and wash the dishes, which he said he was grateful for since he does not believe himself to be a very good cook.

Other guests helped Satchel brave the torrential rains bring clean water and food to the truckers stranded nearby.

“The guests were very helpful,” he said. “It was basically like a big family.”

Satchel was not even able to sleep until his other coworkers arrived on Friday, at which time he took a quick nap while waiting for his family to pick him up. Satchel has also humbly shrugged off his hero label.

“I was always gonna be there for them, I would never plan on leaving,” he said. “I don’t consider myself a hero, that’s just what I would do, I think anybody would do the same thing.”
