Fans of the 1989 Kevin Costner classic movie Field Of Dreams are rejoicing today after it was announced that a professional baseball game is scheduled to take place on the film’s site next year.

As a tribute to the movie, Major League Baseball is building a temporary 8,000-person stadium on the actual piece of farmland in Dyersville, Iowa that was used in the movie. There, the Chicago White Sox will take on the New York Yankees on August 13th, 2020. Construction on the stadium is set to begin on Tuesday, August 13, exactly one year before the game will take place.

This is a historic announcement, as it will be the first MLB game to ever take place in Iowa.

“As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular-season game to the site of Field of Dreams,” said Commissioner Rob Manfred. “We look forward to celebrating the movie’s enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.”

Based on a W.P. Kinsella novel, Field Of Dreams centers on Costner’s character of Ray, a struggling transplanted farmer in modern-day Iowa, who listens to a voice in his head to plow under his corn crop to build a baseball field. The field is then visited by the scandal-ridden 1919 White Sox, which is  part of a larger theme in which Ray gets closure in his relationship with his own late father. The movie was a huge hit, and it continues to touch the hearts of fans everywhere thirty years after it’s release.

We can’t wait to see this game!
